Lore
“It takes a strong dragon to love a broken one.” Dylana’s words echoed in her daughter’s ears. Those were the last words she’d spoken to her daughter, before she’d gone to fight for the Gladekeeper.
Am I broken? Katie wondered. Is that why Mama left? The hurt and confused spiral tied herself into knots that she then struggled to untie without help.
Her father was still there and he did his best to care for her, but the pain of what seemed to her as abandonment preyed upon her, driving her nearly insane. She would try to forget or drown her pain, by curling up in the lairs of dragons she barely knew…trying to keep her body warm and forget the cold mark that had been left on her heart by abandonment.
With each one, she had hopes that he would become her mate and take her pain away. But none of them wanted a mate. They only wanted a warm body to have next to theirs. And that broke her even more.
In fact, the longer she lived, the more broken she began to feel inside. And the more broken she felt, the less valued she felt. And the less value she felt, the more she doubted that any dragon would ever truly love her.
She begged her heart to become ice or stone, to be impervious to pain.
And then she met Dave.
He was a snapper and he seemed so nice. She didn’t know why, but almost immediately she trusted him. They became friends, but quickly the lines became blurred between if they were friends, or if they were mates.
Eventually, they cleared up that line, and became mates. But for some reason he wanted very few dragons, especially not his parents, to know that they were mates. She was unsure as to why, but let it slide.
One day a new dragon showed up. His name was Jacob. He was nice and funny, and she enjoyed talking to him and being his friend.
But Dave didn’t enjoy her talking to him. And he didn’t enjoy her being his friend. He did not like it one bit. Dave turned on her. He continually pressured her to have a nest with him, something she wasn’t ready for. He berated her and yelled at her to quit flirting with the new dragon, even though she hadn’t been. He would ignore her and make her so mad! She knew she wasn’t safe…but she didn’t want to leave him. She didn’t want to hurt him. And she didn’t know what she’d do if she didn’t have him in her life. She was scared and confused.
Then Dave snapped. He screamed at her and yelled at her. He hurt her. She found herself on the cold stone ground.
She was scared.
She was hurt.
She would have welcomed death.
Then a shadow fell over her.
Death had come for her.
She reached for it.
There were sounds of battle. Scratches. Clawing.
She felt someone—was it Death?—lift her up and carry her away.
The pain disappeared.
Darkness took her.
Heaven was near.
When she awoke, she found herself on the ground of another dragon’s sleeping area. A large, male guardian towered over her, concern etched across his features. It was Jacob.
She struggled to stand, wincing at the pain, “I have to leave! Dave will not be happy with this at all.”
“No, no, lay back down, it’s okay. Dave can’t hurt you anymore.”
That relieved her and she laid back down.
He tenderly nursed her back to health, but even when the physical wounds were mended and the scars had faded away, her emotions were out of control. She was terrified of being hurt again, and would flinch whenever someone tried to touch her, even if it was Jacob, the dragon who had tenderly and lovingly cared for her.
She was scared that he was going to turn on her and hurt her the way Dave had…or that he was going to leave her and make her be all alone. Forever.
But he never did.
Then the day came when he asked her a question that she had never expected to hear from him.
“Will you be my mate?”
She was frightened. If she said yes, then everything would change. If she said no, she would hurt him. She didn’t want him to be hurt…and she didn’t want everything to change. She also didn’t want to say no.
So she countered his question with nearly thousands of her own. Questions she wished a protective dragon would ask for her, so she wouldn’t have to...but the dragon that would have been protective enough to ask was the one she was asking the questions to.
He endured her thousands of questions, and she consented to become his mate, even though she was still scared.
He became her protector even more than he already was. Her comfort. Her pillow at night when she fell asleep. His wings covered her and pulled her close to his side to keep her warm, safe and secure. There are times she gets scared that he’ll leave her, but he hasn’t…and he never plans to. And for now…that’s good enough for her.

I don't understand it...I freak out sometimes, but Jacob still loves me and is so patient and gentle. Also, we have eggs ready to hatch soon!

WE HAVE MORE EGGS! I honestly never thought we would get to that point. I mean, one nest and now two? And oh my goodness.... Purity is so like me. She painted Jacob's spines pink! Silly girl!

Tori has a mate! I'm so excited for her! It's Cobalt, he actually was born in our lair. He was such a sweet dragon. He'd better still be a sweet dragon...I hear Jacob sharpening his claws. I love his protectiveness. I hope he doesn't actually hurt the poor guy though. However, while we're at it, I need to find me some knives...just to be on the safe side.

We have adopted Cheeto. Jacob got no say in the matter. I found out that Volt and Dante (most likely just Volt) were pulling a prank on him and his feelings were extremely hurt. He started crying after I told the boys to leave. He doesn't have parents...and he doesn't know why. He and Teardrop are friends and I think it's good for them.
