Lore
"Step right up! We have here a nice leaf, sand, splash mirror hatchling. All basics, she ain't worth much more than a dime! Train her right she could be a nice little maid, make her fight in the coliseum. When you're tired of her, get her to level 10 and send her to your deity!"
The little hatchling shivered as dragons from everywhere swamped around her and other unnamed hatchlings. She was alone and afraid.
"Come on someone, make an opening bid."
"1 gem!" Shouted a voice.
"1000 treasure!" Shouted another.
This went on and on until someone from the back shouted, in a deep, masculine voice, "Give me the hatchling and get yourselves out of here."
Like evil creatures often do, the auctioneer and his cronies ran when discovered.
"Now if you have a home, for crying out loud, GO HOME."
The buyers disappeared first, then the hatchlings one by one, until only the tiny, unnamed hatchling remained, with two cloaked dragons sitting there, watching her.
Her heart slowly made its way to her throat. They might hurt her!
"Do you have a home lair, little one?" The smaller dragon asked. It seemed feminine.
She shook her head, wordlessly.
"Do you have somewhere to go, child?" The larger one asked. His cloaked form resembled a guardian...maybe that's what he was.
She shook her head once more.
"Come with us." The female demanded.
The little dragon instantly began backing away. No way. These dragons might be just as bad as the auctioneer.
They threw their hoods back to reveal a mirror and a guardian.
"My name is DarkFire," the mirror introduced herself, then turned toward the guardian, "and this is my mate, Dusk. We are from Clan HeartThief, and we extend an invitation toward you. I shouldn't have been so demanding. You've been through a lot. You are welcome to join our lair, even if you don't join immediately."
"We heard of auctioneers selling hatchlings and wanted to put an end to it," Dusk told her gently, "We decided that any homeless or orphaned hatchlings, we would take in. Adopt if they would accept us."
"Adopt?" The hatchling echoed.
"Yes. You would be our hatchling," DarkFire whispered.
"Oh." The hatchling carefully inched over to DarkFire and peered up into her eyes. "Cuddles?" She asked hesitantly. She had heard hatchlings who actually had parents asking for cuddles...and she wanted to know what they were.
She stiffened momentarily when DarkFire lifted her up and cradled her in her wings, holding her close, but then relaxed. She felt warm and safe. Buhdumbuhdum. The soft, gentle thumping of DarkFire's heart soothed the baby dragon, and the whooshing of her breath made her smile.
"Cuddles!" She rejoiced.
"Okay, we'll call you Cuddles and you will be our little girl." Dusk announced.
Cuddles laughed. Silly Mommy and Daddy. She was already okay with being adopted.
