Lore
He pulled his heavy load, and as he pulled, he sang. He sang the song from his heart, and because of this, the other dragons called him Heartsong. His song wasn't necessarily beautiful, and the words didn't always make sense, but nothing made sense in the crazy place they were in.
"Get to work, dragons!" A sharp tongued human growled and cracked a whip at them, spitting tobacco on the ground near Heartsong's foot.
Heartsong growled in return, before returning to his singing.
"And you, shut up with your mutterings!" He shouted at Heartsong.
"Why are we here...." Heartsong sang, "Why are they small?"
The dragon next to him, a ridgeback male, jabbed him in the side, "Shut up, you idiot."
"But we're bigger than them." Heartsong protested. "We are more than them!" He shouted in song.
"They have whips!" Cried a female coatl.
"We have claws!" Heartsong sang back.
"They have bang-bangs!" A fae reminded him.
"We have wings!" Heartsong told her.
"Would you dragons hush with your mutters!" The man shouted at them again.
"They go into our world and capture us...." Heartsong sung sadly, lowly. "Why do we not fight back? We lay our eggs for them. We work for them. Why?"
An old snapper moved to walk beside Heartsong. "Silence, young one. This is not the way to rebel against the humans. Wait until the dead of night, when the humans are abed, then rally the dragons together. You will find they will listen more easily, without the threat of guns and whips breathing down their necks."
Heartsong glanced at the old one. Perhaps he had been colorful at one point, but now his scales were all faded to gray. His once red eyes had faded to a sorry shade of putrid pink. What did he know? He was just an old snapper.
"Don't look at me like that, child."
Heartsong recoiled. He was young, but he was far from a hatchling.
"I may be old, but I have lived in the human world for longer than your parents have been alive. Take heed, 'list to the old ones, lest you repeat their mistakes."
"Tonight, you said?" Heartsong asked.
"Yes. I will back you."
"And you are?"
"My name is Moses."
"I'm Heartsong."
"It's a pleasure to meet you, son."
When the sun had slept and the moon rose over the camp, the humans unburdened the dragons, and tied them down, then crept to their cabins and tents, to sleep off their sins, but the dragons remained awake. Moses ambled toward Heartsong, twelve dragons behind them. He introduced them as his tiny clan.
They sat together, making plans to sway the captives, when one of the dragons, a mirror named Peter spoke, "Judas is gone. He was just here. Moses?"
Moses closed his eyes. "Oh, Judas."
"What's wrong?" Heartsong asked.
"I sensed something wrong in his heart. I can only hope I was wrong."
A gunshot rang out.
"I was not. Heartsong, run! Take as many of the hatchlings with you as you can. Do not stay here. It isn't safe. Go straight on toward the river, then cross it. You will find a mountainous region. You have a song in your heart, listen to it...follow it, and you will find the way into the dragon world. Now go!"
Heartsong took flight. He yanked his shackles free, and began crying to the dragons, "Run, be free! Follow me!" Some of them did, but others stayed on the ground, grumbling."
It was utter chaos. There were whips cracking, guns being shot, screams of dragons and humans alike, and when Heartsong turned to look, he saw Moses one last time. Lying prostrate on the ground, his head and body separated, his blood seeping into the ground. He had given up his life so Heartsong and the others could be free.
As the months and years went on, Heartsong met a dragon named Maron, and they became mates. They moved to a fire clan, and had three eggs. But disaster struck their small family.
A mirror named Destroyer fulfilled his name. He forced himself on Maron and she laid his eggs. She came to him crying at what had happened, and it took all of his (and DarkFire's) power to keep him from slaughtering Destroyer. Instead, he takes out his anger on the many beasts in the coliseum. As he trains, he also has secret plans to someday return to the human world, and free not some, but all of those left in captivity.
