Crrrrack. His head peeked out. Instinct told him to look for Mommy. Mommy? Mommy? Where was she? Instinct then told him...if no Mommy, look for Daddy. Daaaddy? Daddy?? No one. Instinct drew a blank. What should he do now?
He tried to return to his egg, but as he moved, it broke entirely, and he was exposed to the elements. No Mommy. No Daddy. No warm. Egg would be better. Egg all broken. No. Bad.
He shivered. Where was he? Why was he cold? Who was he? If no Mommy or Daddy, who would name him?
No Name, No Name. That would be his name. He was named No Name. Broken egg, broken heart. Oh no. He stepped on the eggshell and it scratched his new, baby skin. Oh. Blood. Ouch. Cry.
He crawled to a warm spot, and stayed there. He heard other dragons. Mommy? Daddy? No. Something told him that none of them were Mommy or Daddy. No Mommy. No Daddy. All alone.
He limped, because the egg had scratched him deeper than he expected. Instinct, again, spoke to him and told him he needed to see a healer. Oh, but what was a healer? A healer was Sunshine. Sunshine was a nice coatl.
Sunshine cleaned the cut, and patted the hatchling on the head.
"You don't have a name, do you, little one?" He whispered softly.
No Name shook his head.
"You are now Cheeto."
Cheeto smiled. But then Sunshine turned away. He had patients to tend to, and book learning to do.
Alone. Sad. Poor Cheeto.
He was usually being watched by a dragon or two, and he learned that they were called Hatchling Guards. Basically babysitters, he decided. Oh well. He was fed and warm. But alone.
"Hi..." A blue dragon, two days younger than he, sidled up next to him.
Cheeto hissed.
The other dragon recoiled. "But I just said hi."
Cheeto had never spoken before. The other dragons weren't rude...they just...didn't notice him. "Hehhh." He wasn't good at talking.
The blue dragon tilted his head to the side. "I'm Teardrop."
"Cheeeoh." Cheeto glared. Not at Teardop, at his own seeming stupidity. He couldn't even say his own name.
"It's okay," Teardrop understood, "you don't talk a lot. It could be hard."
Teardrop worked with Cheeto until all of the thoughts and words in Cheeto's mind could come out of his mouth with ease. And then he told Teardrop everything. How sad and truly broken he was. Teardrop understood. Teardrop was his only friend.
He was jealous of other hatchlings. Especially Volt and Dante. Their parents were kind and gentle. And, in all honesty, from what he could tell, would be taking over the lair when DarkFire and Dusk stepped down. Of course he was jealous. He wanted parents. Even if they were wicked or outcasts. There were many days he had entertained the idea of going to Destroyer and asking if he would take him in. But he never did.
He liked to sit on the edge of the cliff and wonder what it would feel like to fall off and if he would learn how to fly by doing so and one day, he was joined by Volt. And one of his stupid, stupid practical jokes.
He exploded. If Katie, Volt's mother, hadn't shown up when she had, Cheeto probably would have done something that he would have later regretted.
"Tell me what's wrong." Katie didn't ask politely, she demanded in a motherly way.
He knew Katie because she was one of the hatchling guards...but she was also busy with her own hatchlings, so Cheeto never tried to talk to her. "Nothing."
"Nuh uh, don't give me that." She settled down beside him. "I have raised two sets of hatchlings...I know when something's bothering a little one."
"Well, I'm different."
"Oh no you're not. It's okay to tell me."
Cheeto turned so Katie couldn't see him.
"Cheeto...."
He felt tears fill his eyes. "I want a Mommy and a Daddy. Everyone has a Mommy or a Daddy except for me. Why don't I have one?" He turned to Katie and she could see his heart breaking. Again. And again. He was just a baby without a family.
She embraced him and held him close, like she would hold her own children. "Because some people don't have Mommies and Daddies when they are born...they have to wait."
"For what?"
"For their mommy or daddy."
"Do they ever come?"
"I think so. Would you be opposed to my mate and I becoming your mommy and daddy?"
"Volt will hate me."
"I didn't ask what Volt thought though, did I? I asked what you thought."
Cheeto looked at her worriedly. What if she changed her mind? But what if she didn't? He saw flashes of her and Jacob cuddling him at night and having brothers and a big sister. He saw flashes of hugs all the time. He saw all the good that could happen if he let her become his mommy. "Please?"

A few days later, he realized how rude he had been to Volt...so...he did something he'd never done before, and went to apologize. It ended well. And they became friends.
He was so excited. He went and told Teardrop, who was, of course, happy for him. And for once, something in Cheeto's life seemed to be looking up.
